TEDxUGA
It all begins with an idea worth spreading.
Alongside hosting an annual TEDx event in the spring and an annual Student Idea Showcase in the fall, TEDxUGA hosts a variety of events in the community. Below are examples of such presentations.
Hunter/Holmes Lecture
Named in honor of Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Hamilton Holmes, the first African American students to attend UGA, the lecture is sponsored by the Office of the President and focuses on race relations, civil rights and education. It has been held annually since 1985.
TEDxUGA was invited to speak during the 2019 event to share with local high school students on how they can make a change in their communities. I served as an emcee of the event. To view the slide deck used during the presentation, click the button below.
Georgia Scholastic Press Association Spring Workshop
TEDxUGA hosted a Salon at the GSPA Spring workshop hosted by the Georgia Center. TEDx salons allow us to create a TED-like experience for new audiences within the local community. During a salon, we show a curated selection of TED videos and engage the audience in a meaningful discussion. I served as an Emcee for the event. During the presentation, my co-emcee and I debriefed on what is “TED” and explored how you can make a difference in your community as a student. TEDme
TEDxUGA is the only TEDx organization in the nation who has a class that helps run the event for course credit. I began my journey with TEDxUGA as a student in the class, and for our final project, we had to write and present our own TED talk - what we coined our “TEDme”.
For my TEDme, I spoke about middle school students, and the reason why most of the public has poor feelings towards that age group. After working with that age group as a camp counselor, I surmised that most people project the feelings they remember having when they themselves at that age onto that age group at large. I explore ramifications in my talk, which you can find linked below.
